This is a ten-semester
hour doctoral level course in the Doctor of Nursing Science Degree
Program. This course is designed as an Independent Study learning
course. When you are at this level in the DNS program, you will
select one focused area of study within your clinical specialty
practice. You now study one focused area of disease/illness, or
concept, theory, or modalities/interventions related to their specialty
area of study. For example, if you have declared Oncology Nursing
as a practice area of specialty, you might elect to conduct your
focus of study on Gynelogical Oncology, or Leukemia's, etc.
This course of study is structured around a comprehensive learning
contract. You develop a learning contract, which provides ten semester
hours of a combination of different learning activities and independent
studies focused on your declared specialty. Upon official enrollment
into this Symposium Course, you are provided with full instructions
for preparing a learning contract, as well as examples of completed
contracts. You and I then review your learning contract and mutually
agree on the defined goals and learning processes to meet the goals.
I provide mentorship, guidance and support to you throughout the
development of the learning contract and its implementation and
evaluation. You are evaluated using mutually agreed upon evaluation
guidelines. The learning contract is a dynamic ongoing process,
which may be revised as you progress in the course. Your learning
needs are given high priority during the development of the learning
contract and the implementation phase. Evaluation criteria are focused
on learning experiences appropriate to advanced clinical practice
at the doctoral degree level. The ten semester hours of learning
are based on a formula: one semester hour is equivalent to fifteen
contact hours of learning activities.
You are allotted
ten weeks of time to complete this course. An extension of up to
five additional weeks is generally approved.
These
are selected based on your individual learning contract.
You and I mutually agree
upon the grading scale for this course. You design a grading scale
for the course within the learning contract. You complete a comprehensive
analysis of all learning experiences during implementation of the
contract.
You are encouraged
to communicate with me. I am available as a teacher, coach, and
mentor to assist you in meeting your goals for this course. Primarily,
communication is through e-mail. However, I am also available for
conversation by telephone if you would like. Our classroom for this
course has a "chat" room. I am also very willing to meet
with you one-on-one in the chat room at your request. From time
to time, depending on how many students are enrolled in this course
at a particular time, we will have some scheduled group chats. You
will receive more detailed information at the time such chat sessions
are scheduled. Please keep my e-mail address handy so that you can

Dominick
L. Flarey, PhD, DCH, MBA, RN,CS,- professor of nursing and President
of Breyer State University. He is a certified Adult Nurse Practitioner,
Certified Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse, and a Board Certified
Clinical Hypnotherapist. He has published extensively in peer reviewed
journals and has authored /co-authored seven texts in nursing. He
speaks nationally on many clinical and administrative topics related
to nursing, including case management, psychiatric-mental health,
and health care law and ethics. He is also certified in Nursing
Administration Advanced, and is a Fellow in the American College
of Health Care Executives.

9). Critically evaluate experiences of independent, self-directed
learning.
10). Begin preparations for developing a proposal for the doctoral
degree project.

You will utilize the
online virtual classroom for this course to access all information
and instructions for the learning contract, including contract samples.
You must have
completed all of the courses in the Doctor of Nursing Science Degree
program, and have successfully completed NRS 850, Clinical Symposium
I. You must also hold an active license as a Registered Nurse.
