Transfer Credits and Prior Learning Assessment Credits


Online Degree Programs

Breyer State University, the innovators in curriculum design, offers students the opportunity to apply for and receive transfer of previously earned college credits/courses toward their online degree requirements. We also provide the unique opportunity for students to make a formal application and request for evaluation/assessment of career/work/prior learning experiences to receive course equivalents for required courses in the curriculum. Students may be awarded transfer credits from past courses and/or via formal application/review for prior learning credits.

Breyer State University will consider transfer credits for its online degree programs according to the following standards/policy:

Associate Degrees: up to 75% of degree requirements by credit transfers of courses which are equivalent to required courses in the degree curriculum and/or up to 15 semester credit awards by prior learning portfolio assessment. A combination of transfer credits and credits by prior learning portfolio assessment are allowable for up to a total of 75% of degree requirements, with a maximum of 15 semesters hours awarded by prior learning portfolio assessment.

Bachelors Degrees: up to 75% of degree requirements by credit transfers of courses which are equivalent to required courses in the degree curriculum and/or up to 30 semester credit awards by prior learning portfolio assessment. A combination of transfer credits and credits by prior learning portfolio assessment are allowable for up to a total of 75% of degree requirements, with a maximum of 30 semesters hours awarded by prior learning portfolio assessment.

Masters Degrees: up to 45% of degree requirements may be awarded by credit transfer courses which are equivalent to required courses in the degree curriculum, and/or up to 15 semester hours of credit awards by learning portfolio assessment; for a combined total of 45% of the degree requirements. Credit transfers do not apply for any Masters Thesis Course.

Doctorate Degrees: up to 45% of degree requirements may be awarded by credit transfer courses which are equivalent to required courses in the degree curriculum ,and/or up to eighteen semester hours of credit awards by learning portfolio assessment; for a combined maximum total of 45% of the degree requirements. Credit transfers do not apply for any doctoral proposal or dissertation course.

Additional Information:

1. Credit transfers of courses are likely accepted if the course(s) is/are "equivalent" to a required course in the degree curriculum. See Online Degree Programs and Requirements.

2. Credit transfers will be considered only from schools which are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accreditor, or a school which is approved or licensed by a U.S. State Department of Education, or a school which is legally exempt from licensing under state laws, or a school outside of the U.S.A. which has the equivalent of appropriate accreditation and/or authorization to grant degrees by a country's Ministry of Education. We reserve the right to have credits and degree programs earned from institutions outside of the USA evaluated by a credentialed degree evaluator.

3. Appointed Academic Officers complete evaluations on all submitted Prior Learning Credit Portfolios, according to their education, majors, and subject specialties.

4. Any degree earned solely by "life credits or experiences" are not considered for course transfers or admission requirements to a higher degree level.

COLLEGE CREDITS/COURSES-Transcript Evaluation Request

Breyer State University offers online degree students the ability to have past earned college credit and courses transferred into their degree programs. Students must make a formal request in writing by mail, e-mail or fax, requesting that previous completed college course work be evaluated for transfer credits. Before submitting a request for evaluation, you must have first completed an online application form. There is no charge and no obligation for submitting the application. If we do not have an application on file, we can not evaluate any request for transcript evaluation. Access application form. Credit transfer requests are conducted by the Academic Admissions Committee of the University.
Please follow these guidelines when submitting a request:


1.

We must receive an official copy of your transcripts for evaluation. You will need to make arrangements with the school or schools for which you are requesting a transfer of courses/credits. All transcripts are mailed to: Breyer State University-Alabama, 2100 Southbridge Parkway, Suite 650, Birmingham, Alabama 35209. We will accept a copy of transcripts for evaluation purposes. Once enrolled into the first course in your degree program, you will then be required to insure that official transcripts are mailed in to us from the school(s) in which we are granting credit transfers for.

2.

You must fill out the transcript evaluation form or you can mail in a written request. This can be via regular postal mail to Breyer State University-Alabama, 2100 Southbridge Parkway, Suite 650, Birmingham, Alabama 35209 or via email to: adm@breyerstate.com, or via fax to 205-414-7499.

3.

In the written request, if you are a current student, please include your full name, your email address, your Breyer State University student ID number and the degree program you are currently enrolled in.

4.

If you are a non-enrolled, interested prospective student, please include in your written request your full name, e-mail address and a phone number, which online degree program at Breyer State University you are interested in, and if possible, please include a copy of your current resume.

5.

Upon receipt of a completed request and transcripts, the academic committee will review the submissions and inform you of which courses will transfer into the degree program. You will be notified of the committee's decision within 10 business days from receipt. Your notification will by e-mail or postal mail.

6.

Currently enrolled students will have approved credits/courses transferred in. The course must be equivalent to the course offered in our online degree program.

Prior Learning Credits

All submitted Prior Learning Credits application and completed Portfolio are reviewed and evaluated by the Academic Officer of the degree subject specialty in which the student is making application. The Academic Officer will provide a comprehensive review of the completed portfolio. Academic Officers: 1). Approve the portfolio and accompanying documentation as meeting the standard for learning objectives/course content based on theory and practice; or 2). Determine that there is a lack of past experiences/learning to meet the course objectives and approve that a student be approved for completing the course via “challenge examinations;” or 3). Deny the application for prior learning credits for a course where the Dean has determined there is not enough past experiences/learning to support the award of credits for a course, based on the core content and learning objectives, and/or lack of theory and/or experiential practice.

Current Academic Officers who are authorized to evaluate submitted portfolio’s are degreed and experienced in the subject area for which they are conducting the evaluation , and are degreed one level above the degree level of the course they are evaluating. All graduate level course portfolios are evaluated by an Academic Officer with an earned doctorate degree.

Currently enrolled students, and those interested in an online degree program at Breyer State University, may make a formal request for an evaluation of possible career/work/prior learning/experience credits for a course or courses offered in the degree program. Before submitting a request for evaluation, you must have first completed an online application form. There is no charge and no obligation for submitting the application. If we do not have an application on file, we can not evaluate any request for credits evaluation. Access application form.

2.

You must complete the official Request for Prior Learning Credits form that is provided on our web site (link below for printable form).

3.

You must carefully follow all directions as provided on the application form, and submit a complete portfolio including all required documents. The portfolio assessment requires the student to documents experiences/learning/ relative to the core content of the course and its learning objectives.

4.

There is a charge of $200.00 per course application and submission of the completed Portfolio.

5.

You must provide full documentation and requested verifications as detailed in the directions for submission of the application for consideration of credits for course equivalents.

6.

Upon receipt of your completed application and portfolio, it will be forwarded to the appropriate Dean for review and evaluation.  You will receive written notification, by e-mail or postal mail, of the Dean’s decision within 14-21 business days.

7.

Currently enrolled students who receive approval of a submitted portfolio will receive full credit for the course required in the curriculum. You will receive a "pass" score for the course.

8.

Non-enrolled students may submit an application for request for portfolio assessment if they; 1) have an application on file, 2) remit the required evaluation fee along with their completed portfolio.  They will be notified of the Dean’s decision regarding their portfolio review, and if they proceed to enrollment, will be awarded the credits for a course or courses approved by the Dean. If the submitted portfolio does not meet standards for the award of course credits, then a refund will be issued to the applicant, minus a $50.00 administrative and evaluation processing fee.

9.

Students are eligible for approved prior learning credits for online degree programs, according to the following standards/policies:

Associate Degrees: up to 15 semester hours of credits

Bachelors Degrees: up to 30 semester hours of credits

Masters Degrees: up to 15 semester hours of credits

Doctoral Degrees: up to 18 semester hours of credits

 

10.

If an application for prior learning credits for online courses is denied by the Dean, then the student will receive a refund of their submitted fee, minus a $50 administrative and evaluation processing fee.

11.

Please note- upper division symposium courses, research courses, major project courses, thesis and dissertation courses are NOT eligible for application of prior learning/experiential credits.

12.

Course credits by challenge examination may be obtained if the Dean’s evaluation is that the student or applicant has demonstrated prior learning in a particular course, but not a complete past learning experience to allow for full credit award. In this case, the Dean may approve the student or applicant to take the course challenge examination. If approved, the student will be eligible to apply for the course by challenge examination. The student will receive full information regarding the examination process. The student must pass the challenge examination for the course with a grade of 70% or higher. The student will be assessed the full tuition charge for the course in which they are challenging. The $200.00 course portfolio review and evaluation fee will be applied toward the total cost of the course.
