SYLLABUS

COURSE OVERVIEW: Welcome to Personnel Psychology, a Doctoral Level course in the curriculum for the Degree, Doctorate in Psychology. Personnel Psychology represents the overlap between psychology and human resource management. It is truly a subfield within human resource management and at the same time a subfield within industrial/organizational psychology, which is the study of human behavior in the work setting.  The overall goal of the course and the course material is to integrate psychological theory with the tools and methods that will enable the student or professional to translate theory into practice effectively.    

TIME FRAME:This is a six-semester hour course and is allotted 10 weeks to complete. You must complete all course requirements by the end of the 10-week period. The first day of the week will begin the day you register for the course or in the alternative on the day you notify the instructor that you are in receipt of the textbook and ready to begin the class. Please be aware of the time frames listed above and also the time frames listed in the syllabus. Further please be advised that unless circumstances warrant an extension of the time frames listed in this section all assignments and exams are to be completed on time and submitted to the instructor upon completion. Upon successfully completing all requirements of this course you will be awarded     semester hours credit toward your doctoral degree.

EXAMINATIONS: There are two examinations for this course, a mid-term and a final exam. The mid-term and final exams cover the material in the text, Applied Psychology in Human Resource Management by Cascio. The first exam will be a midterm must be taken by the end of the 5th week in the course and the final examination must be taken by the end of the 10th week in the course.

GRADING: The grading scale for this course is as follows:

90-100%    = A
80-89%      = B
70-79%      = C
Below 70% = Fail

COMMUNICATION: All students should note that the instructor remains open to all communications between student and instructor. In order to foster the genuine exchange of ideas, the instructor encourages the use of email communication on all issues and topics related to the course. If necessary the instructor also is available by telephone or in the course chatroom. Please let me know which forum is best to communicate with you and I will endeavor to communicate with you in that format.

WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS: There will be six (6) written assignments in this course, which are optional for the student. The instructor believes that the assignments will provide the student with additional  insights into the course material and also provide the student with an opportunity to practice their writing skills prior to both the Midterm and Final examinations for the course. However please note that the assignments are not for credit in the course and only utilized to assist the student in preparation for the exams.
