Civil Litigation for Paralegals Bachelor of Science in Paralegal Studies PL 160 Breyer State University SYLLABUS COURSE OVERVIEW: Welcome to Civil Litigation for Paralegals, a bachelors level course in the curriculum for the Bachelors in Legal Studies Program at Breyer State University. The Civil Litigation for Paralegals course focuses on the theoretical and practical applications of civil procedure and civil litigation in both federal and state courts. The overall goal of the course is to give a paralegal student the necessary background in civil procedure and civil litigation in order to successfully work with an attorney. The course will provide practical skills designed to equip the paralegal student with knowledge of various civil litigation procedures. TIME FRAME: This is an eight-hour course and is allotted 10 weeks to complete. You must complete all requirements by the end of the 10-week period. The first day of the week will begin the day you register for the course or in the alternative on the day you notify the instructor that you are in receipt of the textbook and are ready to begin the class. Please be cognizant of the time frames listed in the syllabus. Further please be advised that unless circumstances warrant an extension of the time frames listed in this section, all assignments and exams are to be completed on time and submitted to the instructor upon completion. Upon successfully completing all requirements of this course you will be awarded eight semester credit hours toward your bachelors degree. TEXTBOOK: There is one required text for this course. Book 1: Fundamentals of Litigation for Paralegals, 4th edition. Maerowitz and Mauet, Aspen Publishers, 2003, New York, NY: ISBN # 735551146.
EXAMINATIONS: There are two examinations for this course, a mid-term and a final exam. The mid-term and final exams cover the materials in the text, The Basics of Paralegal Studies by Goodrich. The first exam will be a midterm and must be taken by the end of the 5th week in the course and the final examination must be taken by the end of the 10th week in the course. GRADING: The grading scale for the course is as follows: 90-100% - A COMMUNICATION: You should note that I remain open to all communication between you and I.
