SYLLABUS

COURSE OVERVIEW: Welcome to Family Law for Paralegals, a bachelors level course in the curriculum for the Bachelors in Legal Studies Program at Breyer State University.

The Family Law course is a one which is intended to provides you with a well-grounded understanding of the fundamentals of family law including topically areas ranging from divorce, custody, domestic violence and marital property.

The overall goal of the course is to give you the necessary background in family law to successfully work with an attorney. The course will provide practical skills designed to give you working knowledge of family law concepts including some of the more controversial and important concepts in the field.

TIME FRAME: This is an eight-hour course and is allotted ten weeks to complete. You must complete all requirements by the end of the ten week period. The first day of the week will begin the day you register for the course or in the alternative on the day you notify me that you are in receipt of the textbook and are ready to begin the class. Please be cognizant of the time frames listed in the syllabus. Further please be advised that unless circumstances warrant an extension of the time frames listed in this section, all assignments and exams are to be completed on time and submitted to me upon completion. Upon successfully completing all requirements of this course you will be awarded eight semester credit hours toward your bachelors degree.

EXAMINATIONS: There are two examinations for this course, a mid-term and a final exam. The mid-term and final exams cover the materials in the text, and both will be short answer essay exams.

The first exam will be a midterm and must be taken by the end of the fifth week in the course and the final examination must be taken by the end of the tenth week in the course.

GRADING: The grading scale for the course is as follows:

90-100%    - A
80-89%      - B
70-79%      - C
Below 70% - Fail

In order to foster the genuine exchange of ideas, I encourage the use of email communication on all issues and topics related to the course. If necessary I am available by telephone or in the course chatroom. Please let me know which forum is best to communicate with each student and I will endeavor to communicate with me in that format.
