SYLLABUS

COURSE OVERVIEW: This course, Wills, Trusts & Estates for Paralegals, is a Bachelor Level course in the curriculum for the Degree of Bachelor of Paralegal Studies. This course will give you a basic overview of estate planning & estate administration.

Estate Planning is the general term used to describe the way by which a person will dispose of his or her property. This field of law has experienced tremendous growth in the last couple of decades as baby-boomers age and look for ways to dispose of their assets upon their death. Except for giving advice, paralegals can complete most duties involved in this field of law such as drafting documents, researching applicable codes, interviewing clients regarding their assets, and filing documents with the court.

The overall goal of this course is to prepare you to successfully work in the estate planning & administration field. You will learn the basic concepts of wills, trusts and estates and become proficient at spotting the various issues that may arise in this area of law.

TIME FRAME: This is an eight-hour course and is allotted ten weeks to complete. You must complete all requirements by the end of the ten-week period. The first day of the course will begin the day that you register for the course or in the alternative, the day that you notify the instructor that you are in receipt of the textbook and are ready to begin the class. Please pay attention to the time frames listed in the syllabus for this course. It is rare that an extension to complete this course will be granted therefore, you should complete all assignments and/or exams on time and submitted to the instructor upon completion. Upon successfully completing all requirements of this course, you will be awarded eight semester credit hours towards you bachelor's degree.

TEXTBOOK: There is one required textbook for this course.

EXAMINATIONS: There are two examinations for this course, a mid-term & a final exam. The mid-term and final cover the material in the text. The mid-term will cover information in the first three chapters of the text. The final exam will cover chapters four through seven.

The mid-term must be taken by the end of the fifth week in the course and the final exam must be taken by the end of the tenth week in the course.

Both exams are programmed and are located in the classroom for this course. The mid-term and the final have a True/False and Multiple Choice component.

GRADING: The grading scale for the course is as follows:

90-100%    - A
80-89%      - B
70-79%      - C
Below 70% - Fail

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR: I, Jennifer Sullivan, Esq., currently instruct in the Paralegal Studies program at Breyer State University. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Northeastern University and a Law Degree from Suffolk University Law School. I am currently licensed to practice law in two states. I have practiced in several area of law throughout my career. My interests include gourmet cooking, collecting cookbooks and fitness. I have completed 3 marathons in the last five years.
