Welcome to Psychology 560: Tests and Measurements, a Master's Level counseling psychology course. I am pleased to be your instructor for this course.
This course will introduce you to psychological testing with regard to relevant theories, applications, issues and ideas. When you finish this course, you will have an understanding of:
1). Reliability and validity that is relevant to test construction.
2).
Uses of testing in a variety of situations to include clinics, psychiatric units, organizational.
3).
The major legal and ethical issues related to psychological testing
4).
How to examine major instruments used in measuring intelligence, personality, achievement, neurological and aptitude.
This is a six-semester hour course. This course is allotted 10 weeks of time. You must complete all of the assignments and requirements for the course successfully by the end of the course by the 10 weeks. The first day of week one will begin the day that you register for the course or the day which you notify me that your textbooks have arrived and you are ready to begin your studies. Please remain cognizant of the time frame. It is rare that extensions of time are permitted, unless you have good justification. Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded six semester hours of credit.
There is one required textbooks for this course and a second that is recommended.

There are three examinations for this course. The tests are made up of between 48 and 74 multiple choice and true/false questions. To keep you on target we recommend you hold this schedule.
The first exam is based on Parts I & II of the required book and should be taken by the end of the 4th week.
The second exam is based on Part III and should be taken by the end of the 7th week.
The last exam is based on Part IV & V and should be taken by the end of the 10th week.
The exams are programmed and are located in the classroom for this course. I will setup the program so you will have access to the test when you are ready. Please contact me prior to the time you take the first test so I can give you specific instructions and ensure that the test is ready for you.
91-100% = A
81-90% = B
71-80% = C
Below 70% = Failed
You are encouraged to communicate with me on a regular basis and when/if you have any questions. I am available as your instructor and mentor and my primary goal is to help you achieve your goals in this course. I can be reached via email, meeting time in the chat room, or by telephone. If you will email me, we can set up an appointment to talk on the telephone or chat room. There will be specific chat room times that I will make available to you upon enrollment. My name is Tom Schear. I have a BA, MA and Ph.D. in social work, MA in counseling, and have taken some additional graduate level courses in business and human services administration. Finally, I am an E-Myth trained business coach and a graduate of Coach University. I have worked at all levels of counseling agencies in Iowa and Montana, including front-line counselor, clinical director and executive director. I now live in the town where I grew up, working out of my home providing continuing education courses for helping professionals, teaching online courses for virtual universities including Breyer State University, Canyon College and provide both online and telephone-based counseling and personal and business coaching services. Finally, I edited/update a book on alcoholism and addiction entitled “Keeping It Simple” and a recently published book entitled “Interactive Ethics: How Ethical and Unethical Decisions are REALLY Made in Organizations.” In my spare time I enjoy hiking, biking, fishing, hunting and spending time with my wife, Kathy and adult children, Brian and Steven and dog, Solo.
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
1). Understand and describe the procedures and theories behind test construction and validation.
2). Understand how psychological tests are interpreted.
3). Look at issues which arise in the use of testing.
4). Construct a psychological test.
